“Male Impersonator”
I had to be fingerprinted as an AmeriCorps service member a few days ago, and when I went online to fill out the pre-application I was surprised to find that the “gender” options were:
1. male
2. female
3. male name, no gender given
4. female name, no gender given
5. male impersonator
6. female impersonator
7. unknown.
I couldn’t even figure out what category I would fall under. So I just picked one, and then emailed the company, FieldPrint to inquire about it. Here’s what they wrote back:
“I can understand your surprise in seeing some of these choices – I too was surprised back when I started in this industry. These selections are required to be provided by the FBI for classification purposes, so they would be the final authority to give a description. From my experience here I can give you the following information:
Male Impersonator = a biological Female-gendered person who, through attire or otherwise, seeks to be identified as a Male.
Female Impersonator = a biological Male-gendered person who, through attire or otherwise, seeks to be identified as a Female.
An impersonator is someone who imitates or copies the behavior or actions of another. This term is intended to reference the person making the selection, should they fit the criteria for the choice.”
I guess I’m just submitting because I was wondering if anyone else found this to be really odd.
